Lucy set the tip cup outside the window discreetly behind the ‘copay due at time of service’ sign, and required each timid patient who muttered conspiratorily, ‘this may be a stupid question’ to drop a quarter in the cup before she would answer; later she would put every quarter into the box at her local general store marked ‘for literacy’ and laugh heartily at her own secret irony.
